We need medicine!

CLICK HERE to view the video.

The Jesus Loves Me Children’s Clinic is passionate about providing free medical care to Liberia’s most vulnerable children.  As patients make their way through our clinic, they are prayed for multiple times and have the Gospel clearly communicated to them.

Liberia is one of the poorest countries in the world.  83% of Liberians live on less than $1.25 USD a day.  Many children die needlessly due to the lack of medical care.  Our clinic needs more medicine!  Will you please help us?  Let me share some statistics with you.

Over the past 6 months, our patient load has more than doubled.  On average, we are growing at the rate of 107 patients per month.  Last month, we served 1,270 patients!  We have treated 7,002 patients so far this year.

As you can see from this chart, our medicine cost has grown exponentially over the past 17 months.  This is due to our increased patient load.  Last month, we spent $4,510 on medicine.  This year, our medicine costs have increased by $518 each month.

This graph shows the cost of medicine and salaries.  Our salaries increased in May because we hired additional staff.

On average, it costs only $3 to treat a sick child!  It does not take a lot of money to save a child’s life!  Will you please consider partnering with us by becoming one of our clinic’s monthly supporters?  Will you please pray with us that our clinic’s income will increase by $5,000 a month to sustain its growth.

You can support our clinic online at liberiacalls.blogspot.com or by sending checks to:

Meet our teachers as they celebrate a successful school year!

CLICK HERE to view the video!

Here at Hope for Home, we know that our school will only be as strong as our teachers.  I praise the Lord for giving Fairview Missionary School many teachers who truly love their students and who are eager to learn new ways to teach.  Last week, our school in Denta Town closed for its summer break.  School will resume in September.  During the month of August, new teachers will be selected as a new grade level will be added to the school. All the teachers will be trained and they will meet to prepare for the 2022-2023 school year.

Hope for Home is committed to helping our teachers further their education. Last September, we entered into a partnership with a local college to begin hosting college level classes in Denta Town.  This partnership enables our teachers to attend college while living deep in the bush.  Believe it or not, the college sends teams of professors into the bush to train our teachers!  This unbelievable luxury costs only $6,000 annually for 14 teachers.  Thank you for making the gift of education FREE for both our students and our teachers!  You are giving a very beautiful gift!

Please keep our students in your prayers.  The demonic secret society is very active during school breaks.  Last year, several of our students were initiated into this wicked society.  Our mission is doing everything that we can do to help children choose to follow Jesus and to say no to Satan!  Many Liberians are told that they will never be employed and will never get married unless they join the secret society.  Most of Denta’s adults have already been initiated.  It is the only life they know.  Please pray that the Light of the Gospel will shine bright in Denta Town!

TESTIMONY: Lead Engineer of the Jesus Loves Me Children’s Clinic Project

LIVE2540, one of Hope for Home’s mission partners, recently released this video testimony of Darryl Byle.  Darryl lives on our base here in Liberia and is the lead engineer for the Jesus Loves Me Children’s Clinic project.  I thought you would enjoy viewing their video and reading their article:

“At 61, engineer Darryl Byle felt God calling him from his busy    work life in Montana to Liberia where he would be constructing a hospital for thousands of children in the interior, or “bush” as locals call it.

For over 20+ years Darryl has been running his own businesses, often having 2-3 different jobs going at the same time, until recently he felt God convicting him to “let go of the things of this world and to follow Him to Africa.”

After much conviction, Darryl took a trip to Africa with no intention other than to see what the Lord was already doing. After spending time with some of our mission partners in Bong County, Liberia, and hearing about the plans of building a clinic for some of the most vulnerable children in the world, he committed to becoming the lead engineer of the new 10,000-square-foot hospital build.

Darryl has spent most of this year on-site in Liberia leading a group of 50+ men. He’s not only teaching them new ways to build but he’s growing a relationship with each of them through morning devotionals and discipleship.

We’re getting excited to cut the ribbon at Jesus Loves Me Children’s Clinic! We’re hoping to start the early phases of operations by the end of the year. Darryl and the team are constructing a building that is meant to withstand the difficult Liberian climate and conditions for decades. Our mission at LIVE2540 is to keep this clinic operational for the children that need it most. If you wish to partner with us, that would be wonderful. You sign up below to become a monthly or one-time partner of the Jesus Loves Me Children's Clinic.”

Spontaneous Dance & Celebration in Denta Town

CLICK HERE to view the video

When parents learned how well their children were doing in school, spontaneous dancing and celebration broke out.  This celebration went through the night and into the next day.  Things have not always been this way in Denta Town.  Not too long ago, human sacrifices were still taking place.  The month before we started working in Denta, 5 children died from preventable sicknesses.  Denta’s children were underweight, uneducated and chronically sick.  Thank you for partnering with us through child sponsorship!  There is now a medical clinic, school and feeding program in Denta.  God is truly working.  Child sponsorship does more thank change a child’s life, child sponsorship transforms communities.

Child sponsorship costs $40 a month.  We use this money to disciple, feed, educate and medically treat your children.  Currently, we have 42 children in Denta Town on our waiting list.  We are preparing to register children for next school year.  At that time, more that 50 additional children will be added to our waiting list.  Thank you for your partnership in the Gospel!

If you are interested in sponsoring a child, contact our sponsorship team at liberiasponsorship@hopeforhome.org .

Mission Update 6-25-22

God Saved Devine’s Life:

Little Devine is a precious gift from God.  When asked, “how ‘d’ day,” his sweet little voice sheepishly says, “I alright!”  Two weeks ago, Devine was not alright.  As a matter of fact, we nearly lost him.  God had mercy on Devine and spared us great sorrow!

Sunday, June 12, Devine woke up and played as he normally played when he suddenly had a seizure and went unconscious.  He remained unconscious for 11 hours.  During that time, he had multiple seizures, some lasting up to 9 minutes.

After Devine’s initial seizure, our medical team tired to treat him in our small clinic.  Devine’s condition quickly became critical so our team transferred him to the nearest hospital.

Third world hospitals often lack supplies and medicines and are often underfunded and understaffed.  This is exactly what we found upon arrival.  Devine was given oxygen from an oxygen concentrator while the nurses told us that they did not have rubber gloves to treat him.  We went and bought gloves.  Next, we were told that there no needles to establish an IV line.  We bought the needles.  The hospital’s medicine was critically low.

While nurses tried to establish an IV line, I asked for a doctor.  I was told that the doctors were in Monrovia.  I instantly began sending messages to our partnering doctor, Dr. Mikey, who was on furlough in his home country of Wales.  Dr. Mikey was able to direct nurses and prescribe medicines while on the phone.  While communicating with Dr. Mikey it became clear that we needed to transfer Devine to another hospital. As we considered this option, we learned that the ambulance’s oxygen bottles were depleted and that there were no doctors at the next nearest hospital.  We frantically began to call around to all the hospitals and clinics in our county.  We had to get Devine to Monrovia fast, but we knew that he would not survive the trip without oxygen.  Believe it or not, we could not find any full oxygen bottles in our county!  It quickly became clear, Devine would have to be stabilized before we could transfer him to a hospital in Monrovia (3 hours away).

As Devine’s life hung in the balance, our team prayed and asked God to have mercy!  I have prayed this prayer many times for children and many times the Lord has answered my prayers with a painful “no.”  Too many children die needlessly!  This truly breaks my heart!  This day was different!  On this day, God’s answer was a resounding, “YES.”  Shortly after praying, Devine’s oxygen levels and heart rate started to stabilize and his breathing became regular.  After observing him briefly without oxygen, we loaded him into my land cruiser, and we made the risky journey to Monrovia.  That evening, after checking into a hotel, I got a phone call from Susan, Devine’s mom.  She said, “Devine wants to talk to you.”  Next, I heard Devine’s innocent little voice, “Hello.” I asked Devine, “How ‘d’ day?”  He said, “I alright.”  I was shocked.  How could Devine be so close to death one minuet and be completely alright the next?  After getting off the phone, I called our team members and told them that if they wanted to do something fun, they should call Susan and ask to speak to Devine.  Text messages quickly came back saying, “It is a miracle!”

I am beyond thankful that God spared Devine’s life!  The doctors ran several test and found nothing abnormal other than Devine’s normal hydrocephalus.  Thank You Jesus for making Devine “alright!”

I believe the Jesus Loves Me Children’s Clinic is God’s answer to countless prayers for help!  Our clinic will be fully equipped and well staffed.  Together, God’s Church will bring a desperately needed solution to this medical crisis!

Virtual Tour Through the Jesus Loves Me Children’s Clinic:

The Jesus Loves Me Children’s Clinic is nothing short of a miracle.  About a year ago, our medical team began to pray that God would help us open a children’s clinic.  Then, without our involvement, God orchestrated the following events.  First, Dr. Mikey visited our special needs village and felt compelled to work with us to help meet the medical needs of children in our area.  Second, Live2540 contacted us about raising money to build a children’s clinic.  They raised over $500,000!  Praise God!  Third, Darryl Byle, visited us on a short term trip.  I met Darryl for the first time while picking him up from the airport.   As I got to know Darryl, I learned that he was an amazing structural science engineer.  To make a long story short, Darryl designed our children’s clinic and temporarily moved to Liberia to supervise its construction!  Lastly, Dr. Mikey and his wife Dr. Bethany have committed to overseeing the clinic.

As you view this virtual tour, please know that you are looking at a miracle of God!  There is nothing but gratefulness in our staff’s hearts as thanksgivings overflow!  As the walls of this clinic go up, we know that God is doing something for us that we could never do on our own!  Thank You Jesus for giving us this wonderful gift!  Thank You for allowing us to participate with You as You love on Liberia’s children!  May thousands of children come to know Jesus and find their healing inside these walls!  God is good and His great love endures forever!

Ways to Partner:

Recently, I was asked the question, “How can I help?”  Ministry is all about partnership.  It takes a team of committed partners for a ministry to be strong.  Here are practical ways you can partner with us:

1. You can partner with us through prayer! You can stay up-to-date with all that is going on in our ministry by joining any of our following newsletters: His Safe Haven’s village for special needs children, Fairview Missionary School, the Jesus Loves Me Children’s Clinic, M1014 (Mark 10:14) formula program for orphan babies, Suzie McLay (missionary from New Zealand) and Don Riley (missionary from USA) send out regular updates.  You can join any of these newsletters by sending a request to susan@hopeforhome.org.

2. You can become a full time missionary!  We are praying that God would call many missionaries to join us in Liberia!  We need educators, doctors, nurses, pastors, farmers, and people who just want to love on children.  We are praying for humble servants of God who are committed to working together for His glory!  The harvest is plentiful and the workers are few.  Please pray that God would send more workers into Liberia.

3. You can visit us on short term trips!  We love short term mission teams!  These teams have repeatedly strengthened our ministry and refreshed our staff members and missionaries.  Thank you for visiting us!

4. You can become a financial partner!  Here are practical ways you can financially support our various ministries.

Jesus Loves Me Children’s Clinic

-  You can help buy medicine: One of our greatest needs is more funding for medicine!  Last month, we were able to treat 1,391 patients with $2,800 worth of medicine.  That averages out to about $2 per person!  A little money goes a long way in Liberia!

- You can sponsor a medical staff position:  Physician assistants make $400 monthly, registered nurses make $300 monthly and nurse aids make $200 monthly.  When the new clinic opens, we will need to hire several additional team members.

- You can help us build missionary houses for medical missionaries: It costs approximately $35,000 to build a house equipped with a small solar system.

Fairview Missionary School:

- You can sponsor a child: Child sponsorship costs $40 monthly.  We use this money to disciple, feed, educate and medically treat each sponsored child.

- You can sponsor a staff position in our schools: Here are their monthly salaries. Currently, our education director makes $250, principals make $200, teachers make $150 and teacher assistants make $125.  We pray that in the future, our education director will make $400, principals will make $300, teachers will make $200 and teachers assistants will make $150.

His Safe Haven Village for Special Needs Children:

- You can sponsor or help sponsor a child with special needs for $100 a month.

- You can sponsor a staff position.  Here are their monthly salaries: Our village director makes $400, moms make $200, substitute moms make $150, cooks make $150 and security make $110.

- You can build a special need’s group home for $15,000.  We believe God designed for children to be raised by families and not by institutions.  Therefore, His Safe Haven Village creates families.  We hire widows to care for up to 4 special needs orphans.  Widows are permitted to have their children and adopted children live with them in the village.

Agriculture:

- You can sponsor an agriculture staff position: Our agriculture director makes $400 monthly, team members make $110 monthly.

For all the various ways you partner with us, THANK YOU!  Your partnership is very precious to us!  May the Lord richly bless you all!

“Every person who serves God is a missionary.  For those who are called either to short term trips or to be a full time foreign missionary, I pray that this video will take away some of the fears that you might have of foreign missions and make it more familiar.  God’s kingdom is not limited to one culture, it reaches throughout the whole world!

I know that some people, who are interested in short term missions, wonder how fruitful their trip will be.  All of us at Hope for Home have found these trips to be incredibly fruitful both to the Liberians and to us missionaries.  Personally speaking, I have been refreshed by those who visit.  Their fellowship is wonderful!  For those who have visited us in the past, thank you!  For those who would like to visit in the future, our mission highly welcomes you!”

BEHIND THE SCENES: JESUS LOVES ME CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
While the construction of the Jesus Loves Me Children’s Hospital is ongoing, there are many things going on behind the scenes to prepare for it’s opening.  We know the strength of our hospital will be found in our medical team.  As goes our leaders, so goes our hospital.  Last month, we interview countless people for physician assistant positions, registered nurse positions, and nurse aid positions.  We literally spent hours with each candidate as we sought the Lord’s will.  We took our time during the interviewing process in hopes of avoiding future problems caused by hiring the wrong people.  Last week, we had the wonderful privilege of presenting our final candidates to Dr Mikey for his final selection.  This month, we hope to hire 1-2 additional physician assistants, 4 additional registered nurses and 4 additional nurse aids.

During the interviewing process, we observed each candidate as they screened patients and interacted with our children at His Safe Haven Village.  If a candidate did not demonstrate through their actions a sincere desire to follow Jesus, a competence  in the medical field, and a genuine love for children, they were eliminated from the hiring process.  We passionately communicated to each candidate that we do not hire employees, we hire medical missionaries!

With God’s help, our hospital will do much more than treat sick children.  We want to help each child take their next step toward Jesus!  We are aware that the hospital will literally give us influence in the lives of children and parents from every home in our city, many homes in our county and even influence in the lives of people from neighboring counties and countries.  Thank You Jesus for giving us this wonderful privilege.  May the Lord find us faithful!  May Jesus’s name be lifted higher and higher!  May Liberia’s children come to know the love of Christ and choose to follow Him!

Matthew 19:13-15
“Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people, but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” And he laid his hands on them and went away” (ESV).

Mission Update: 3-26-22

Construction Has Started:

Today, my daughter, Grace, and I visited the Jesus Loves Me Children’s Hospital construction sight on the way to a Bible study.  After walking through the trenches, we got in our car and started driving down the bumpy, dusty road.  To our surprise, laying in the middle of the street, in front of the construction site, was a small child who was too sick to walk.  As our car approached, her body did not move.  Grace and I quickly exited the car to lend a hand.  I asked the young girl if she was alright.  She said, “I sick.”  Her three younger siblings were standing next to her.  Praise God, her frail body collapsed in front of our property.  She received free medical treatment and learned that Jesus loves her.

Last month, a small orphaned girl became very sick.  Our physician assistants started treating her under the oversight of Dr. Mikey from our small, two room medical clinic in Gbarnga.  One night, around 11pm, the girl’s oxygen level dropped and we were forced to transfer her to a local hospital since our small clinic was not equipped with oxygen machines.  When I carried her frail body into the emergency room, no one greeted us and no one offered to help.  I stood in front of the nurses station with her limp body dangling from my arms.  Inside the nurses station, the counters had been cleared and the entire medical team was asleep on the counters.  When I asked for help, one nurse raised her head in frustration, glared at me, and laid her head back down to sleep.   A nursing student eventually came to help.  “What do you want me to do?” He asked.  I told him that the child’s oxygen levels were low and we needed help.  He pointed to the a bed and told me that they had no sheets but I could put her on the bed.  After I sought additional help, a doctor came to assist us.  He did not seem to mind the nurses who were asleep on the counters.  The hospital had no syringes and no IV needles.  They had an oxygen machine so we stayed.

The medical crisis in Liberia is beyond the ability of most people from the western world to comprehend.  Thank You for building the Jesus Loves Me Children’s Hospital!  When it is built, we will no longer need to refer our patients to other medical facilities.  In fact, the ministry of health has told us that all the local hospitals will begin referring their patients to us!  Thank You for giving our medical team the tools that they need to make a great impact on the lives of children in central Liberia.  May the Lord richly bless you!  Our medical team is committed to giving each child the best medical care that is available in Liberia while helping each child take their next step toward Jesus!  May every child come know that Jesus deeply loves them!

Mission Update: 3-1-22

The Wordless Bible

I want to tell you the back story of the children in this video so you can understand the spiritual victories that we celebrate.  Our ministry has been working in Denta Town for several years.  Every step we take is a battle.  We have faced nonstop trials, persecution and hardships.  We praise God that His Kingdom is moving forward in the midst of great difficulty.

Denta Town has a treacherous history of witchcraft and demonic worship.  Children are often initiated into demonic societies.  Just last week, our teachers found fresh blood spilled all over a desk in one of our classrooms.  Without doubt, the blood was a result of witchcraft which seeks to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10).  The message is clear: “We know you are here.  We do not approve.  Stop what you are doing or we will kill you.”  This year, we suspect that two people from our mission were killed by poisoning.  Trust me when I say that we have shed our fair share of tears.  The police are afraid of the demonic societies so there is absolutely no justice.  Last month, two self-professed witches freely confessed that their goal is to kill everyone involved in our mission.  They confessed to already attempting to kill two people from our mission and to successfully poisoning another.

Now that you have heard the backstory, will you please join us as we celebrate every step our children take toward Jesus.  God’s Kingdom is moving forward!  Nearly every child in this video is from a family that is part of these demonic societies.  Our student’s lives are literally surrounded by those who practice witchcraft.  Our student’s parents have not initiated them in the demonic societies because they value education and they do not want their children to miss the opportunity to attend our school.

Our students memorize a new Bible verse each day at school.  As a result, they are on course to memorize the majority of the New Testament, word for word, chapter by chapter, book by book, before they graduate High School.

We praise God for the Sword of the Spirit, the Word of God (Ephesians 6:17).  We are equipping our students with the Word of God so they can stand their ground in their dark and demonic world.  2 Corinthians 10:3-5 says, “We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.”

Please pray with us that each of our children will choose Jesus and that they will turn their back on Satan!  Lord Jesus, please make us abundantly successful at discipling Denta’s children!

Fairview Missionary School Construction:

Fairview Missionary School is located in Denta Town.  Check out the progress that is being made on the school building!!!  For all of us in Liberia, we know that this building is nothing short of a miracle!  Thank You Jesus for giving us land in Denta Town and for helping us build the first phase of our school building!  This month, ceilings, windows and doors will be installed.  God has been more than good to us.  Thank You Jesus and thank you to God’s Church for your sacrificial giving!

“A Dream Come True” - The Jesus Loves Me Children’s Clinic

The Jesus Loves Me Children’s Clinic is a “dream come true for us,” said the county health officer of Bong County, Liberia.  “Do not underestimate the need,” he continued.  “Prepare yourself.  We will begin to refer children to you from all the local hospitals.  People from Nimba County, Lofa County and the country of Guinea will begin crossing the boarder to seek medical treatment. Once people learn that there is quality health care for children, you will be overrun with patients.”  The County Health Officer went on to explain the need for a pediatric clinic while discussing the high infant and maternal mortality rates in the county.

Thank You for making this project possible.  If everything goes as planned, the foundation of the Jesus Loves Me Children’s Clinic will be laid within the next few weeks.  As the project moves forward, additional medical team members will be interviewed, hired and trained.  We are working hand in hand with the ministry of health and need their final approval of our blueprints before construction can start.  Please pray for this approval.  We praise God for giving us the unbelievable honor of freely treating all of our county’s children while helping each of them know that Jesus loves them.  We want each of our team members to view themselves as medical missionaries.  Imagine a hospital where ever staff member prays with their patients as they treat both the body and the soul.  May Jesus’s name be lifted high and may many lives be saved here on earth and into eternity!
