Construction Has Started:

Today, my daughter, Grace, and I visited the Jesus Loves Me Children’s Hospital construction sight on the way to a Bible study.  After walking through the trenches, we got in our car and started driving down the bumpy, dusty road.  To our surprise, laying in the middle of the street, in front of the construction site, was a small child who was too sick to walk.  As our car approached, her body did not move.  Grace and I quickly exited the car to lend a hand.  I asked the young girl if she was alright.  She said, “I sick.”  Her three younger siblings were standing next to her.  Praise God, her frail body collapsed in front of our property.  She received free medical treatment and learned that Jesus loves her.

Last month, a small orphaned girl became very sick.  Our physician assistants started treating her under the oversight of Dr. Mikey from our small, two room medical clinic in Gbarnga.  One night, around 11pm, the girl’s oxygen level dropped and we were forced to transfer her to a local hospital since our small clinic was not equipped with oxygen machines.  When I carried her frail body into the emergency room, no one greeted us and no one offered to help.  I stood in front of the nurses station with her limp body dangling from my arms.  Inside the nurses station, the counters had been cleared and the entire medical team was asleep on the counters.  When I asked for help, one nurse raised her head in frustration, glared at me, and laid her head back down to sleep.   A nursing student eventually came to help.  “What do you want me to do?” He asked.  I told him that the child’s oxygen levels were low and we needed help.  He pointed to the a bed and told me that they had no sheets but I could put her on the bed.  After I sought additional help, a doctor came to assist us.  He did not seem to mind the nurses who were asleep on the counters.  The hospital had no syringes and no IV needles.  They had an oxygen machine so we stayed.

The medical crisis in Liberia is beyond the ability of most people from the western world to comprehend.  Thank You for building the Jesus Loves Me Children’s Hospital!  When it is built, we will no longer need to refer our patients to other medical facilities.  In fact, the ministry of health has told us that all the local hospitals will begin referring their patients to us!  Thank You for giving our medical team the tools that they need to make a great impact on the lives of children in central Liberia.  May the Lord richly bless you!  Our medical team is committed to giving each child the best medical care that is available in Liberia while helping each child take their next step toward Jesus!  May every child come know that Jesus deeply loves them!
